"Governer veto's CA RoHS AB48" by john@rohsusa.com on November 4, 2007, 4:48 pm, in category Environmental impact issues

The governator has veto'd AB48 which would have directly mapped California RoHS to the EU RoHS legislation.
The text of his letter to the California senate assembly is here:
"To the Members of the California State Assembly:
I am returning Assembly Bill 48 without my signature.
This bill exponentially expands the scope of electrical and electronic equipment subject
to the Restriction on the use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) provisions under the

The EU have requested data on the impact of WEEE and RoHS on the electronics industry..............
Go to the Home page of RoHSUSA.com and click on the banner for details of the questionaires.
My personal view (on the lead in solders ban)is that it might have been diligent to assess the financial and environmental impact of such a far reaching legislation BEFORE inflicting it on the planet.

"Round 6 Exemption request thoughts" by john@rohsusa.com on February 22, 2007, 10:14 am, in category Environmental impact issues

Exemption request 15 under stakeholder consultation round 6 has been running for 1 month and 12 days and I just had an interesting though which is:
On my original support for stakeholder consultations under round 5, the consultants dismissed the evidence supplied in support of using lead in solders since, as they said in their report:
“review of basic assumptions behind the ban of lead in the RoHS Directive would be an evaluation of the RoHS Directive and the political decision be..... Comments

Someone e-mailed me and asked whether the pictures on the web site were my bikes. For the record the answer is "some of them".
All of the bikes we own are from Triumph in England, and I ride them every day in the bay area..... It takes a lot to get me to drive anything but a motorcycle, and if I am on two wheels it had better have rolled out of the Triumph factory at Hinckley.
My two are a 1000cc daytona sport bike and a 2300 cc Rocket III cruiser with California license plates..... Comments

Environmental legislation should do one thing: improve the environment.
By John Burke.
As I write, 284 letters have been sent to the EU in support of exemption request 15 under round 6 of stakeholder public consultation. That proposal dates to last May, when I requested all lead in solder for the purposes of electrical interconnection be exempted from RoHS because the “replacements” pose a muc..... Comments

At last - a positive banning of something in electronics which will positively benefit the environment.
A Californian Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is proposing legislation to ban the use of "conventional" incandescent lighbulbs in California by 2012 in favour of the newer energy efficient compact flourescent variety.
Now THAT is a positive banning of something in electronics which the EU would be well advised to take note of and emulate.
If the EU were to ban conventional ..... Comments

I am extremely angry and also fearful about the impact Rohs will have on the reliability of our products. It has already cost our small company well over 100,000 to get some of our products to meet compliance. Our military and medical industry refuses to use Rohs... and I only wish I could join them!
